In a public key system, each user has his or her own private key. The user's public key, which works with his or her private key, is distributed to fellow communicants. When a person wants to send data to someone else, the sender encrypts it with the receiver's public key. Because the receiver is the only person in possession of the matching private key, only the receiver can decrypt the data.
